Never Forget
Dear Ted, Dad,
It was only three years ago we first met, but it seems more like a lifetime.
It was a casual note from you commenting on something you saw on my webpage... I can't even remember what it was but it was the beginning of friendship that grew faster and stronger than any I've ever known. I've never known anyone quite like you and I doubt I ever will again. You are one of a kind...The toughest, most determined, most unfaltering, most courageous man I've ever had the honor of calling Brother, Friend and Comrade in Arms.
I'm sitting here now trying to be as courageous as I can in view of this latest attempt of yours to shock me into silence so you can have the last word again. Well, it won't work. I'm not going to just let it go this time. This time I get the last word.
You've been my mentor, my Brother and my surrogate Dad since the beginning of our friendship. You gave me insight into subjects I'd never understood, pulled on my coat when I was screwing up and helped me move past some difficult experiences.
I remember when we were building your website and I asked you what music you wanted. I was expecting something stirring or martial like the National Anthem or Wild Blue Yonder. You wanted "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and I couldn't talk you out of it. Now I'm glad you stuck to your guns because every time I watch an old Judy Garland movie or see a rainbow I'll think of you.
Then it was that damn animated graphic of a flying horse that looked like an ugly, oversized bird and took all day to load. I tried to talk you out of that too but you said you liked it. I'm glad I went along because now every time I see a horse or a bird I'll think of you.
I remember the night you called me and asked if I knew the difference between a good Marine and a bad oyster...I'll let that one go.... That will stay between us. But I will think of you every time I see an oyster...good or bad....
For months after we met, you had me convinced you were a 35-year-old 'devil may care' renegade hell raiser, even though that would have made you ...What?...six years old when you were capture by the NVA?
You have a way of making me believe anything...
I wish you could make me believe this is all a big mistake...that you'll call me tomorrow and tell me you're getting the boat ready for our fishing trip.
I wish you could call me in the morning and tell me you and Linda were coming to New Jersey and we could make plans for a night of drinking, singing and story-telling at the pub.
When the news came, I was not ready. I was still praying for the miracle. For months now, I've been afraid to answer the phone. Now I don't have to be afraid anymore. But it will never be the same again.
I'll try to deal with this the way I think you'd want me to. I'll stand as tall as I can, bite my lip and try to live with the knowledge that you won't be calling me anymore with a bad joke or good idea. I'll try to accept that I'll never be able to shake your hand, go fishing with you, or have a friendly father to son chat again. I'll never be able to trade Marine/Air Force barbs, joke about politicians or share that bottle of Bushmills at the New Hampshire Primary.
And I'll try to live with the pain of knowing I never got to say goodbye...
Well Dad, now you finally have the answers we searched for together. And you have the peace and freedom you fought so hard to gain for others.
Say Hi to Rick for me...and to Ken George and Jason and Misty. Tell them I'll see you all as soon as I'm done here...
And now that you can't yell at me for saying it:
I love you Ted ... and I'll miss you more than you could ever know.
GBU&CUL
Gunny
I hope you heard me play tonight...I did one just for you. You know the one. The one we talked about last summer.

A friend of mine let me borrow the book Survivors and I was totally in awe at what Hawk's Heroes did while they were POW's. Because of men like Colonel Ted Guy, I have found a new respect for those who served in Vietnam and who are serving all over the world now. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

The memory of our exit from Siagon is chiselled in our mind forever. The brave souls, who "have their today for our tomorrow" will always be remembered by my family and I. Pradeep

I have lost a personal hero. I was the NCO in charge of public information for returned POWs arriving in the Tucson area during Operation Homecoming, where I met Colonel Guy for the first time. I'd already become friends with his wife and children through another POW wife. The courage I saw in that family as they waited, unaware of Ted's status, and then waited again when they learned he was coming home, was a fine example even for an Air Force brat like me. Then I met him, had dinner with the family, and gingerly sounded him out about his experiences. I was 22. I'd just returned from the war zone myself, and I was very twisted about the war and my government's role in it. Ted got me to remember that I served the people of the United States and I could see my "boss" just by walking down the street, looking around me. He brought home to me that we fought for the freedoms our fathers and grandfathers also had defended, and that as long as our country had need, our sons and grandsons would defend it. He taught me a lot, right up to his transfer to his first post-war assignment, and he was an example to me of the Code of Conduct, of a professional military officer, and of a true (if quiet) American patriot. He'd been through all those years of hell, and whenever we were together, his concern was for my well-being. I'll never forget him, or the others - returned or not - who paid a much higher price than the rest of us veterans. God bless and keep you, Ted.
This is all very nice. I was a graduate student for a long time and I used to read about Guy. Now when I return from Hanoi, Vietnam, where I spend much of my time now, it is very different. Does anyone on this web sight listen to it's readers if they write back? During my travels to Hanoi I have had the privilage of being taken to a crash sight of a naval jet that was shot down. There are many mysterious events around this that I speak to you about. I wrote to another alliance organization and they simply lied to me. I need someone who is serious about listening to me. I purchased a piece of the wing of an F-4 in Hanoi and took it to proper authorities but I don't trust them as I don't think that they care anymore. Please answer, Julian Pacheco.

A TRUE HERO IS GONE FROM US. WE SOMETIMES TAKE FOR GRANTED WHAT THE GOOD LORD GAVE TO US. WE OFTEN TIMES HAVE TO ENDURE THINGS THAT WE DON'T WANT TO, BUT THAT IS ALL IN THE WILL OF GOD. REMEMBER THE TIME THAT WAS SPENT WITH THIS GREAT HERO AND THE MANY LAUGHING FACES THAT HE LEFT BEHIND. ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT HE LIVES IN THE HEARTS OF THOSE HE TOUCHED.

I met Ted at Reese AFB way back in the '63-'66 time frame and he was a pro in the UPT business and as good an aviator as there was. The next time I saw Ted was at Air War College, Class of '74 (the POW Returnee Class). The change to the man was beyond dramatic. His intensity was beyond measure regarding the war itself and what it had done to his comrades-in-arms. He was outspoken on all of the wartime issues and was never found wrong in his judgment or his statements. He fought for the Nam POWs like no other and commanded the respect of all of us who shared his warrior spirit. He made his "last flight" far too soon and he will be missed by all who knew him before, during, and after the SEA conflict. We'll proudly fly his wing again one day. Very respectfully, Goldie

My brother was a P.O.W. for a long time and lost the battle of life in a foreign land. We were fortunate to get him back home to lay to rest. Because of people like you, many other families will also be able to have closure. May others take up and carry the banner in your absence! Thank you for all you have given and may God now give you peace now that your battle is done.
It was wonderful to see this kind of website.!
THANK YOU FOR SERVING OUR NATION. THIS COUNTRY WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO REPAY YOU OR ANY OF THE SOLDIERS BACK FOR ALL THAT YOU GUY HAVE EVER DID FOR US. I JUST WISH THAT THE GOVERNMENT WOULD FIND OUR HEROS AND BRING THEM HOME.
I wish to send my deepest sympathies to all who knew & loved him. In doing research for a book on grief and grieving, inspired by the terrible accident and death of my brother, I came across this beautiful memorial. May you find the peace we need to go on, that tells our hearts they are still with us every time we think of them. Not sure what to say except my condolences to the family. Col Guy was a good friend of my mother and father. Stationed together at Reese AFB as instructor pilots. He and Col Guy shared not only first names, but both were from Illinois, and from the stories my dad told, he was a great guy. His was the only POW bracelet that my older sis would wear until he came home. Myself, I remember the look on my dad's face when he told my mom that he had been shot down. The story of his shootdown. I remember the drama of the days when the he seemed to be the only man alive willing to meet justice out on those Army traitors -- protests outside Homestead AFB, and some of the outrageous comments from the then Sec of the Army. All these things I remember about a man I never met, but I constantly thought of Col Guy throughout my own USAF career -- especially during my training at survival school in 1985. My dad passed away in August 1989 in Rogers, Ark. I guess both men lost touch over the years, because had my dad known he lived close by I'm sure he would have invited him down. Personally I'd of invited him to many an event over the years. Heck -- I was at Whiteman AFB 1994-97! I was sort of shocked today when I came across his name at various web sites during a totally unrelated search for an old USAF buddy of my own. I'm glad the Col was treated well and remembered by many. Tim Trusk, Lt Col, USAF (Ret)

To The Family Of Colonel Guy...You can all be proud of what your Father accomplished for his Country, these United States of America. He did his job as he was trained to do, and in a manner which brought great credit to him. To those of us that he and his fellow Airmen supported so gallantly, we give thanks to Our Almighty God for their being there when we really needed them. May The Good Lord Bless his memory, and be with you always.
To The Family Of Colonel Ted Guy....Our freedom today is result of men like your Father, who did his job as he was trained to do, and how he knew to do it. You can all be justly proud of his accomplishments, and his tremendous contribution to Our United States of America. May God Bless his memory and be with you always.

I didn't know Ted Guy , but from what I've been reading from the people who did he has to be one hell of a hero. Now maybe two heroes will meet. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. We will NEVER FORGET!!! Thank you for our freedom. And may God bless our people in the service at this terrible time in our Country.
Some men became heroes because they did their duty in spite of fear and of the odds against them. They were probably as afraid as the rest of us but refused to let fear stop them.I was lucky I came home but I wonder if I could have performed as he did in the same circumstances-that is true heroism.

My children are blessed with a freedom that isn't free and that price was paid by all of the men and women who believe in us as much as we believe in them. The price of freedom is most deffinatly NOT free but will be cherished by myself and my sons. I want to say one last thing......Welcome Home! I pray daily for the 4 soldiers I have adopted. Thank you. We must never forget. God be with our POW/MIAs until they are all home, or safe with Him.
Thank you Colonel, and all of the Warriors like you who have provided us with such a great Country. The freedom to travel anywhere, anytime we want, and we do not have to speak Japanese, German or any other Foreign language. You are a National Treasure and you will always be in our hearts and our prayers. Hope to get to meet you up there someday. From an old, very tired Sergeant.
I would like to say that this American hero puts another star in the sky and is making it brighter for all the others who are left beind.May the Lord bring them all home someday. Sandra

God Bless our men in the military, for they are the ones who have kept everything we hold dear, safe. They are the bravest, the best. They should be looked upon as our national treasures, for they surely are. They and their families should never be hungry or homeless or forgotten.

No thank you will ever be enough for all the lives lost and changed forever by war. This war we have tried to forget for most find it a senseless war. Even if it was, the men who fought for their country shouldn't be forgotten whether alive, missing, or passed away. A soul full of gratitude, love, and ever-mounting respect shall remain in this heart and mind. Thank you to all the men who served and still are serving today wherever they may be.

I Have spent Over an hour reading about your life, and all the things you have done to fill it. your medals are over wellming, and your pain is Heart felt. Pow/Mia is a subject that should be taught in basic like NBC. Our country sends us (I can say this because i am a combat vet) to free others with no consern of bringing us home. our great Nation will pour billions into saving the whales, our the spotted owl, yet all it takes is a plane and some fuel to send us back in for those who are left behind. for all who read this remember he is a hero. and the word was should never be used when refering to this soilder. thanks soilder. james

The fact that we have lost so many heroes in the course of the Viet Nam War, as in all wars, does not diminish nor does it lessen the pain of knowing that another hero has died. I feel his loss, as I felt the loss of my buddies and those who were maimed and torn apart by the war in Viet Nam. I pray that God will know what a great prize he is taking into Heaven with him and his minions. God Bless TED GUY.

I'm forty years old, grew up watching on the tube. Wanting to be like John Wayne, Adie Murphy (real hero} and the rest. No one knows what it's really like, until your in it..I was at a drive in with my mom to see "The green berets", to this day it haunts me. A Marine in dress blues offered me a coke, a 9 or 10 year old kid. I was always warned of strangers....I still feel so sad did he make it back? He was just being nice, at the time I didn't understand. God bless "HAWK". As of 18 Feb. 2001, my POW\MIA will be gone thirty years. I don't for a minute think the government has done half of what they could.. I've been wearing his braclet for twenty two years and will continue. R.I.P. WO Gearld E. Woods, 101st ABN. I will never forget the service veterans have served, suffered, and endurred for us all. To all the fellas that dodged the Vietnam draft, I hope they all feel guilty that others took their place. They can live with the knowledge that others will do their duty. Don
I will never forget what servicemen have done for our country. I'll remind everyone till my dieing day. Freedom is not free! Unfortunatly, kids now days would just not like to hear about the suffering that others endurred. This includes those who dodged the Vietnam draft. I am the daughter of the soldier who caused many concentration camps to be found after his discovery of Camp Dora. I first entered your site to thank whomever wrote about my father in your Moonduster newsletter, but I was very touched upon entering. What a beautiful web site and memorial. The letter from Gunny was very touching and close to my heart. Thank you.

It is with a full, yet hopeful, heart that i write this message. Full, because of the burden i have for Nam Vets. Hopeful, because of the evidence of support being shown for our beloved soldiers who are still MIA/POW. i am 43 years old. i was just a teenager in 1974. i wasn't old enough to fight in Nam, but God has given me a burden for those men and women who did. Now, it's been over 25 years. It is time for reconciliation. However, there can be no human reconcilation without first being reconciled to the "Reconciler." That is God, The Father. There is now no condemnation awaiting those who belong to Christ Jesus. For the power of the life-giving Spirit - and this power is mine through Christ Jesus - has freed me from the vicious circle of sin and death. {Romans 8:1-2} - THE WAY - The Living Bible - i promise to be more faithful to pray for the healing and release of our precious men and women, as well as closure for the families of those who are MIA/POW. I WILL ADOPT A VET. Love, Cindy
Sir I would like to thank you for your service to my and your country. I too know that there are POWs still in Laos and Nam. It is with much sadness that one has to realize that a country could forget its fighting men. Politics and love of money does many wrongs and this of leaving soldiers in a forgotten land is one of the saddest. Thank you for giving to me the freedom of being able to live in a country that although has its many down falls, still is the greatest one in the world.
