Scars and Stripes by Eugene "Red" McDaniel Here are some thoughts from co-author James L. Johnson: "There are many reasons why I felt the story of Captain Eugene
McDaniel should be recorded in print. First, of course, is that his story emphasizes
the traits that help man to survive the worst that may happen to him. In a time in
history when a man seems so ready to succumb to the pressures of the hour, to bow to the
destructive elements he cannot control and then ultimately to resign himself to
"things as they are," Captain Red McDaniel, like others of his comrades, revives
the dormant spirit that moves people to overcome at all costs.
