Special Pay for Disabled Veterans
Sent in by Veterans News and Information Services

This in from a retired Navy vet.

This is to let you know that the Defense Finance and Accounting Service, Cleveland Center will begin paying the additional $100-$300 Special Pay beginning on 1 April 2000 retro active to 1 October 1999.

This Special Pay was authorized by the Defense Authorization Act 2000 and is payable only to those Veterans who retired from their respective branch of service due to longevity and were given a disability rating of 70%-100% from the VA within four months of their retirement.

I received a letter confirming that the Special Pay would be electronically deposited to my bank account on 1 April. The letter I received was from DFAS and also provided telephone numbers for point of contact concerning this special authorization. It also informs that this special pay is not tax exempt and subject to withholding and reported to the IRS.
