SPRINGFIELD, Va. -- A drawing by 11-year-old Cecilia Javier titled "My Military Family" will be featured on this year's Military Family Week poster.

Javier is the daughter of Air Force Master Sgt. and Mrs. Noriel Javier of Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan. The poster featuring the sixth grader's portrait of her family will be distributed to military installations around the world this fall.

The Armed Services YMCA sponsors the annual art contest and presents $500 U.S. Savings Bonds to winners from each of the services.

"This year's drawings, as in the past, reflect the challenges and joys of life in the military as seen through the eyes of elementary school age children," said retired Rear Adm. Frank Gallo, national executive director of the Armed Services YMCA. "Moving to new communities was a prominent theme this year, with many of the drawings depicting moving vans, traveling scenes, and leaving friends.

"Other drawings included a wide variety of family activities such as going to church and visiting libraries, commissaries, and other places on the installation," he said. "Each year, the children tell success stories of military families through their drawings."

Military Family Week this year will be celebrated from Nov. 21 through Nov. 28, the Thanksgiving holiday period. Many installations conduct programs and special events recognizing families during that time. The Armed Services YMCA each year disseminates materials for use in connection with the week, including posters, greetings from the president and senior enlisted advisers, and family certificates.
